Key Breakout: the Arizona Telemedicine Program’s 2017 Telehealth Technology Update

Information is power, and the power of health information will be on display at the 10th annual Health Current Summit & Trade Show, The Power of Fully Informed Health, Oct. 30-31 in Glendale, Ariz. Health Current, Arizona’s statewide health information exchange (HIE) – formerly known as Arizona Health-e Connection – has been the nation’s fastest growing HIE over the past two years.

Today, with more than 350 participating organizations, Health Current has clinical data on 7.5 million unique patients and includes more than 80 of the state’s largest behavioral health providers and most Arizona hospitals.

Information on more than 90 percent of Arizona hospital inpatient admissions and emergency department visits flows into the HIE, allowing it to be a valuable resource for providing real-time alerts to community providers on patients that need to be closely followed.

On Oct. 16, Health Current began offering one of the primary tools for Arizona providers under the new statewide prescription monitoring program (PMP) mandate that requires prescribers to check patient prescription histories before prescribing opioid or benzodiazepine drugs.

A panel discussion at the Summit & Trade Show will look at Arizona’s opioid crisis, the state’s PMP mandate, and how Nebraska’s statewide HIE is fighting the opioid epidemic with a successful PMP implementation.

Brent James, MD, former Director of the Institute for Health Care Delivery and Research at Intermountain Healthcare, will talk about the power of health information with his keynote address on Monday, Oct.30. Dr. James, an advocate for using data to improve quality and lower costs, is internationally known for his work in clinical quality improvement.

The two-day Summit & Trade Show will offer several other presentations, panel discussions and breakout sessions on the power of health information, and the Arizona Telemedicine Program will present a 2017 Telehealth Technology Update.
