Joseph Finkelstein, MD, PhD, FAMIA, FACMI

Joseph Finkelstein, MD, PhD, FAMIA, FACMI is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine, Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine – Tucson where he serves as the Director of Arizona Telemedicine Program and Director of Transformation Health (T-Health) Institute. Dr. Finkelstein completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University, where he also obtained a master’s degree in biomedical informatics. Prior to the University of Arizona, he served as the Chief Research Informatics Officer, Senior Associate Dean for Information Technology, and Professor of Population Health Science and Policy at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He had also been serving as the Director of the Center for Biomedical and Population Health Informatics and the Associate Director for Cancer Information Technology at the Tisch Cancer Institute, where he led a core service focused on access to information technology and data analysis for cancer researchers. Dr. Finkelstein is a board member of the Society for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (AIME) and the International Society of Virtual Rehabilitation. Dr. Finkelstein’s research focuses on the development, evaluation, and implementation of novel healthcare technologies aimed at facilitating the delivery of precision digital health interventions to improve healthcare outcomes. His research includes (1) AI-driven personalized interactive patient engagement, empowerment, and counseling; (2) AI-enhanced telehealth and telerehabilitation for guideline-concordant disease management, and care coordination; and (3) data science and healthcare analytics for quality improvement and predictive modeling of individual chronic disease trajectories. Currently, he serves as Principal Investigator on the NHLBI-funded clinical trial aimed to assess the comprehensive informatics framework for pulmonary telerehabilitation, and the DoD-funded clinical trial to evaluate AI-assisted support of patients with metastatic prostate cancer on androgen deprivation therapy residing in rural areas. Dr. Finkelstein authored over 230 peer-reviewed publications, several patents and books devoted to telemedicine, digital health, and clinical data science.
