Keeping Care Local via Telenephrology

-

Presenters: Rhonda Mason, RN, MSN; Mandeep Sahani, MD

Description: Rural hospitals often lack nephrology coverage or dialysis capabilities, forcing patients with end-stage renal disease and other kidney conditions to travel elsewhere for care. Telenephrology provides 24/7 access to nephrologists and supports local staff in delivering dialysis when needed. This session will review how such programs improve access to specialty care, maintain continuity for patients, and enhance outcomes in rural settings.

Outcome Objectives

•             Understand impact of chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease on U.S. healthcare and on the state of Arizona.

•             Describe why nephrology is an ideal fit for telemedicine and options for introducing a telenephrology program.

•             Explain how telenephrology is helping rural hospitals stay vital and financially stable in their communities.
