Burkholderia may be an uncommon pathogen, but it’s impact can be devastating if not quickly recognized. Join us in unravelling the mystery behind this challenging organism in our series on envenomations, intoxications and travel-related diseases in the Southwest, and sharpen your ability to identify and respond to potential cases!
OUTCOME OBJECTIVES
• Recognize the epidemiology, modes of transmission, and clinical presentations of Burkholderia infections, including their relevance in emergency and prehospital care.
• Differentiate Burkholderia from other common pathogens by identifying key diagnostic features, risk factors, and patient populations most at risk for severe disease.
• Apply strategies for initial recognition, infection control, and management of suspected Burkholderia cases in the EMS and emergency department settings, including when to escalate care.
