Speaker: Stephen Klotz, MD

Description: Not all water-related emergencies are drowning or trauma—some of the most serious threats are infectious. This session explores two uncommon but clinically significant water-associated infections, Leptospirosis and Paragonimus kellicotti, with a focus on recognition in prehospital and emergency department settings. Designed for EMS/EMT professionals and ER physicians, this webinar highlights key exposure risks, clinical red flags, and time-sensitive management considerations that can improve patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify high-risk environmental exposures and patient history elements associated with leptospirosis and Paragonimus kellicotti infection.
  • Recognize early and atypical clinical presentations relevant to EMS and emergency department evaluation.
  • Initiate appropriate diagnostic testing, empiric management, and public health notification when waterborne infections are suspected.
